Alkali-silica reaction – a multidisciplinary approach

چکیده
In the last four years, a multidisciplinary study involving several research groups in Switzerland tackled number of unsolved, fundamental issues about alkali-silica reaction (ASR) concrete. The covered topics include SiO2 dissolution, characterization various ASR products formed at different stages both concrete and synthesis, crack formation propagation. encompassed scale ranges from nanometers to meters. Apart conventional techniques, novel methods for field have been used, e.g. combination scanning electron microscopy with dissolution experiments, focused ion beam transmission microscopy, synchrotron-based methods, synthesis in-depth characterization, time-lapse X-ray micro-tomography combined contrast-enhancing measures numerical models damage based on realistic patterns. Key achievements findings are quantification effect aluminum silicates, variance morphology composition initial products, differences similarities between amorphous calcium-silicate-hydrate, link temperature structure crystalline behavior varying relative humidity, propagation 4D modelling

Studies on the Alkali–Silica Reaction Rim in a Simplified Calcium–Alkali–Silicate System
This work is intended to provide a better understanding about the properties and roles of the reaction rim in an alkali-silica reaction. A simplified calcium-alkali-silicate system was created to simulate the multiple interactions among reactive silica, alkaline solution and portlandite near the aggregate surface during the formation and evolution of the reaction rim in an alkali-silica reactio...
متن کاملEfficacy of Aluminum Hydroxides as Inhibitors of Alkali-Silica Reaction
A comparative study of amorphous and crystalline forms of commercial aluminum hydroxides as inhibitors of alkalisilica reactions in Portland cement mortars has been performed. It was found that at dosages of 1% to 3%, amorphous aluminum hydroxide can efficiently inhibit alkali-silica expansion of Portland cement compositions. High inhibiting activity of amorphous Al(OH)3 additives may be explai...
متن کاملEffect of Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) in Geopolymer Concrete Final
Alkali silica reaction (ASR) occurs due to chemical reaction between hydroxyl ions in the pore water within the concrete matrix and certain forms of silica. This reaction could lead to strength loss, cracking, volume expansion and potentially failure of the structure. This manuscript reports findings of an experimental investigation of the inter-particle bonding between the reactive aggregates ...
متن کاملPolymer Action on Alkali-silica Reaction: Further Research
Polymer modification of mortar and concrete can lead to improved transport and mechanical properties and thus its potential for an inhibiting effect on ASR or on resulting damage was investigated. An accelerated mortar bar test in a NaOH solution bath at 80 oC had already been established as inadequate to assess the behaviour of polymer-cement mortars (PCMs) under ASR, but compared to that of a...
متن کاملEffect of applied stresses on alkali–silica reaction-induced expansions
The mechanical effects of alkali–silica reaction (ASR) have to be modeled in order to assess the deterioration level and the stability of ASRdamaged concrete structures. Several experimental programs have shown the effects of compressive stresses on ASR-induced strains. The effect is so significant that assessment models have to take into account the modification of ASR expansions due to applie...
